How to switch to the New banner engine

How to move your consent banner from the Legacy engine to the New engine, and what to check first

Last updated About 2 hours ago

Consent Studio has two engines for your consent banner: Legacy and New. The New engine performs better and adds themes, more banner positions and a notice on blocked content. New domains start on the New engine. Domains that were added earlier may still run on Legacy, and you choose when to switch.

What the New engine adds

  • Themes for the look of your banner.

  • More banner positions, including the middle of the left and right side of the screen, and the option to stretch the banner to the edges of the screen.

  • A full-width row per button on phones, which you set under Mobile Button Order.

  • A notice on blocked content, so visitors see why an embed is not loaded yet.

How to switch

  1. In the top bar, open the Web CMP dropdown and click Behaviour.

  2. Go to the Engine section.

  3. Choose New.

  4. Check your banner in the preview.

  5. Save. Your visitors see the banner on the New engine within a few minutes.

Don't see the Engine section? Then your plan does not include the New engine yet. Contact support and we'll help you further.

Check this before you switch

The New engine looks the same at first sight and keeps your settings, texts and translations. It also keeps the JavaScript API, the dataLayer events and your integrations working as before. Under the hood, the HTML of the banner is new. Most domains need no changes, but check these points, or ask your developer to:

  • Custom CSS. The New engine uses new class names. If you styled the banner with your own CSS, check that your styling still works in the preview and update the class names where needed.

  • Links that open the banner. Links with #consent-banner or #cookie-list and buttons with data-action keep working. For new links, use #cs-prompt to open the banner and #cs-overview to open the overview of tracking technologies. You can also add the cs-trigger attribute to any element on your page.

  • The overlay. If you use an overlay, it now also stays visible behind the overview of tracking technologies.

Switching back to Legacy

You can always switch back to Legacy under Web CMP > Behaviour > Engine. Settings that only exist on the New engine, such as a theme or a stretched banner, are kept but have no effect on Legacy.

If your plan does not include the New engine, switching to Legacy is one way. The Engine section then disappears, and you can't switch back to New yourself.
