Domain Aliases

Show your banner on staging, preview and other extra hostnames of the same website

Last updated About 2 hours ago

A domain alias is an extra hostname that uses the consent banner and settings of your main domain. Use it for hostnames that belong to the same website, such as a staging or preview environment, or a subdomain like shop.example.com.

Your banner only loads on your main domain and the domain aliases you add. If you test on a staging or preview hostname that isn't added as an alias, the banner won't load there.

When to use a domain alias

Use a domain alias for:

  • Staging, test and preview environments, such as staging.example.com or preview.example.com.

  • Subdomains that are part of the same website and should show the same banner, such as shop.example.com or checkout.example.com.

For local development you don't need an alias: localhost is permanently registered and managed by Consent Studio. See Local development options.

Add a separate domain instead when it is a website of its own, for example a different country domain (example.de, example.fr) or a website that needs its own settings or its own Monitoring scans. See How to manage multiple domains.

You don't need to add www.: it is always included with your main domain.

How to add a domain alias

  1. Click the cogwheel icon in the top bar and open Domain Settings.

  2. Open the Domain Aliases tab.

  3. Click New domain alias and enter the hostname, for example staging.example.com.

  4. Click Save & Publish.

If you use Launcher and it is published, you'll be asked to republish Launcher after changing your aliases, so your tags also work on the new hostname.

Rules for domain aliases

  • Enter only the hostname, without https:// or http://.

  • Don't start with www..

  • Don't use spaces, commas, @, / or \.

  • An alias must contain at least two periods, like staging.example.com. Need an alias with one period? Contact support@consent.studio.

  • A hostname that is already used by another domain in Consent Studio can't be added as an alias.

How many domain aliases you can add

The number of domain aliases included depends on your plan. If you add more than your plan includes, the dashboard shows an Overage notice and the extra aliases are charged. You'll find the prices on our pricing page.

What a domain alias shares with your main domain

  • The same consent banner and settings. A domain alias has no settings of its own.

  • The same tracking technologies. Monitoring doesn't scan domain aliases, so if a tracking technology only appears on an alias, add it yourself under Monitoring > Tracking Technologies. See the Scanning FAQ.

Share consent across subdomains

By default, a visitor gives consent per hostname. To share consent across all subdomains of the same root domain, go to Web CMP > Behaviour, open the Consent Sharing tab and enable Share Consent Studio cookies across subdomains.

Many domains?
