Without GTM or gtag.js: how to install Consent Studio

A standalone version of Consent Studio

Last updated 3 days ago

Standalone installation of the Consent Studio CMP, without Google Consent Mode

Add the Consent Studio Installation Code directly in the <head> of your website, as high as possible and before other scripts. The Installation Wizard recommends this Code path when you can edit your website's code. Use this guide if you answer No to Are you using Google Analytics and/or the Google Conversion Linker on your website? Do you use Google tags? Then follow How to install Consent Studio in combination with gtag.js instead.

Prerequisites

  • Make sure that you have basic knowledge of HTML and JavaScript before using this installation method.

1. Make sure that you have an account with Consent Studio

Log in to the dashboard. If you do not yet have an account, you can create one here: Create an account

2. Add the Installation Code to your website

The only supported way to get the Installation Code is the Installation Wizard: open Web CMP and click Install Consent Studio, click Next, and answer Yes to Are you comfortable editing your website's code, and do you have access to do so?. If you're asked Are you using Google Tag Manager?, answer No. Then answer No to Are you using Google Analytics and/or the Google Conversion Linker on your website?. On the Recommendation step you get the Installation Code. The wizard tells you to add it to your website's <head> section, before other scripts.

Copy the Installation Code from that Recommendation step and paste it as early after opening the <head> element of your HTML page as possible, before other scripts. Do not lazy-load, defer or delay it. Also remove any other CMP that may already be installed on your page to prevent conflicts. A bare banner.js script tag is not supported; only the Installation Code from the wizard is.

3. Customise your cookie banner

You can do so in your consent.studio dashboard. More details can be found in this article.

4. Monitor your implementation

Now that you have finalised your implementation, we recommend keeping an eye on what your Consent Studio dashboard (we have a health check page that becomes available to you when issues are detected by our scanner).

Also, please keep an eye on whether Monitoring finds tracking technologies on your website. If your website does use tracking technologies, but Monitoring does not find any, it may be because of any of these causes:

  • You do not have the correct domain registered with consent.studio;

  • You have another CMP installed on the domain;

  • No scan has ran just yet (please wait up to 15 minutes after registration for your initial scan to start)
