Using Shopify Customer Privacy API with Consent Studio as your consent management platform (CMP) of choice

How is consent processed?

When a user grants Functional (cookie) consent through the Consent Studio banner on your website, we will set trackingConsent for preferences to true.

When a user grants Analytics (cookie) consent through the Consent Studio banner on your website, we will set trackingConsent for analytics to true.

When a user grants Marketing (cookie) consent through the Consent Studio banner on your website, we will set trackingConsent for marketing to true.

How to enable this integration?

Log in to your Consent Studio dashboard.

Inside of the Consent Studio dashboard, head to Web CMP > Integrations.

On this page, you will be able to view all active and available integrations.

Toggle the Shopify Customer Privacy API by clicking on it. Enabled integrations are shown under Active Integrations.

Don't forget to save your changes by clicking Save & Publish.

The sale_of_data signal

Consent Studio also sends Shopify's sale_of_data signal. It follows the visitor's Marketing consent: when a visitor grants Marketing consent, we set sale_of_data to true. When a visitor doesn't grant Marketing consent, we set it to false.

Before a visitor makes a choice, sale_of_data follows the Marketing default in the integration settings (see below).

Default consent values before a visitor makes a choice

Until a visitor makes a choice in the banner, Consent Studio sends default values to Shopify. You can change these defaults in the integration settings:

  1. Go to Web CMP > Integrations.

  2. Under Active Integrations, click Shopify Customer Privacy API to open its settings.

  3. Under Default Consent Values, choose Denied (opt-in) or Granted (opt-out) for each setting.

  4. Click Save & Publish.

The settings and their defaults:

  • Preferences default: Granted (opt-out)

  • Analytics default: Denied (opt-in)

  • Marketing default: Denied (opt-in). This value is also used for sale_of_data.
